In Defense of Originalism

By Logan Blakeslee It is no accident that in the separation of federal powers, as described by the Constitution, there is actually very little authority bestowed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Article III and its provisions offer an outline for how our nation’s judicial branch should function, and astute readers will quickly notice that the Constitution does not permit the Supreme Court to enact or enforce the law, but primarily to settle “controversies”—or in other…

Will BU Shut Down?

By Our Staff Universities across the country have begun their Fall semesters, with mixed results. There have already been full shutdowns, partial shutdowns, and threats of shutdowns if rules are not adhered to more strictly. What does this mean for Binghamton University? Will our school face a similar fate? Here are some predictions regarding how long the semester will last from five of our staff members. Will Anderson – Three weeks. If you fully believe…

SA Endorsements

By Our Staff Ladies and gentlemen, it’s SA election season. That annoying time of year when you’re bombarded with flyers and social media posts about candidates you know nothing about, who are running for positions you know nothing about. Six SA Executive Board positions are up for election, and to make matters even more confusing for the vast majority of students that do not give a shit, all six positions contain the word “President” in…

Response to Frances Beal Society’s Response to Tom Reed & Harvey Stenger

Dear Frances Beal Society, I made a great sacrifice in writing this. Not only because it means forfeiting my sexy article for Binghamton Review’s Valentine’s Day issue, but because it means I have to stoop to your level and engage in a discussion I shouldn’t have to have. I must set the record straight for the 10th time, knowing full-well the facts will get glossed over in place of emotional self-victimization. I write to tell…

Defamation & Prejudice: A Reflection on 2019

By Spencer Haynes As I have reflected on the political tumult of the past year, certain quotes, and newspaper articles have stuck out to me, helping me understand how certain biases and attitudes came to fruition this fall. I would first like to discuss Pipe Dream, and their bias against the College Republicans. To expose this bias, I will compare articles from the past year covering very similar events. The first covers the Republican/Turning Point…

Di(n)vestigating Bing

By Robert Thomicide One important aspect of the democratic process is political activism as it allows government officials to know which issues are the most important. As a result of advances in technology and communication, political activism has become much more prevalent in the 21st century. Political activism doesn’t always lead to the best change, however. Take for instance the Divest movement, which has recently started at Binghamton University. While I do not wish to…

Arthur Laffer Event Shut Down by Protesters

By Tommy Gagliano On November 18th, 2019 at 7:30 PM, Binghamton University College Republicans hosted an event in Lecture Hall 8 titled “Trump, Tariffs, and Trade Wars.” The event featured world-renowned economist Dr. Arthur Laffer. According to College Republicans President John Restuccia, the purpose of the event was “to educate students on campus about free enterprise and limited government.” Four days prior, on November 14th, College Republicans set up a table on the “Spine” to…

Leftist Mob Harasses Conservative Students at BU

By Tommy Gagliano On November 14th, 2019, a crowd of an estimated size of 200 or more gathered on the “Spine” (a long central walkway in the middle of campus) at Binghamton University. Some were screaming and hurling insults, others were stealing or damaging property, and some were merely there to observe the chaos, or to record it on their phones. How did this happen? What led to this reaction, and the formation of such…

Love you BU, but you got no spirit

By Thomas Sheremetta I’ve been at this school for almost a year and a half, and in no way do I regret coming here; however, the one major drawback of this university (besides the cold), is that there is NO DAMN SPIRIT. I guarantee most people came here because it’s the “public ivy” of SUNY schools; that’s surely why I came. But, these same people barely make an effort to show any kind of pride towards…

The MRC and Microaggressions

By Tommy Gagliano Recently, Binghamton University students in certain classes were required to attend a mandatory lecture by the Multicultural Resource Center. The lecture was an hour long, and focused primarily on microaggressions. Along with the lecture, each student was given two handouts – one with examples of microaggressions, and another with tools to fight against microaggressions. Both handouts were formatted as charts. The first handout had 3 columns – the theme, examples of microaggressions…

The Audacity of This Bitch

By Rebecca Goldstein I have been a member of the Binghamton Review for about two years now, and within the past two semesters I have noticed that we have some big issues. See that joke there? In all seriousness, many of our issues (otherwise known as our property) are being defaced and destroyed. Reminiscent of notes your mom left for you in your lunchbox, we’ve had cute notes left for us declaring us “fascists.” A…

Free Market(Place)

By Emma Ryan Following the release of Pipe Dream’s article, “Campus Dunkin’ charges more than local Vestal, Binghamton stores,” outrage ensued. Students and employees alike were shocked and offended to discover that “60 of the 90 items were more expensive on campus.” Are these price hikes justified? Is there a solution to the complex pricing system of on-campus eateries? The primary defense of owner Santina Christian is that operating on campus involves a different and…
